Call for Papers for the Modern Language Association (MLA) Conference, Seattle, WA, January 9-12, 2020

ANS Panel at the Modern Language Association Conference

January 9-12th, 2020 in Seattle, WA

The American Name Society is inviting abstract proposals for a panel with the literary theme “Semantic relations and personal names.” Names have meanings. They bear specific semantic connotations that, albeit forgotten by their users, are exploited by authors to evoke subsequent layers of interpretation. Papers of this panel will explore this practice and investigate how meanings of names are employed and to what ends, with a focus either on specific authors or with a broader scope. Examples of themes that can be addressed may be semantics of names in literary theory, name choices due to semantic connotations, intertextual relations based on the meaning of names, etc.

Proposal submission process:

  1. Abstracts proposals of up to 400 words should be sent as an email attachment (PDF format) to Dr. Andreas Gavrielatos (gavrielatos@reading.ac.uk).
  2. Proposals should include “MLA proposal” in the subject line of the email.
  3. All submissions must include an abstract title, the full name(s) of the author(s), the author affiliation, and email address in the body of the email and NOT with the abstract.
  4. DEADLINE: Proposals must be received by 5pm GMT on 31 March 2019. Authors will be notified about results of the blind review on or by 03 April 2019.
  5. Contributors selected for the thematic panel must be members of both MLA and ANS in order to present their papers.

Call for papers: Symposium “Place Names and Migration”, Vienna, Austria, November 6-8, 2019

The Austrian Board on Geographical Names is celebrating the 50 year anniversary and invites to the GeoNames19 Symposium “Place Names and Migration” in Vienna, 6-8 November 2019.

Migration is a global and all-time phenomenon. Related to place names, this prompts a number of delicate questions: How do migrants deal with place names? Do they accept the place names they find? Do they adapt them to their own language by translation, morphological or phonetic adaptation? Do they create new names of their own for already named places? And how do long-term residents of the place react to these attitudes?

Submit the title of your paper until the 31st March 2019.

Call for papers: 29th Anthroponymy and Toponymy Conference, Algaida, Spain, October 4, 2019

The 29th Anthroponymy and Toponymy Conference will take place on 4th October 2019 at the Casal Pere Capellà (Algaida, at the University of the Balearic Islands). The call for abstracts will remain open until 31st May 2019.

The thematic areas are:
a) Toponymy. Geographical aspects
b) Toponymy. Historical aspects
c) Toponymy. Normative aspects
d) Anthroponymy. Philological and historical aspects

If you would like to present a paper, we would appreciate it if you would send the title of the paper and abstract (300 words max.). Registration for attending the conference is also now open. Registration is free. We will be issuing attendance certificates.

Call for proposals: The 2020 conference of the American Association for Applied Linguistics

The 2020 conference of the American Association for Applied Linguistics (AAAL) will be held at the Sheraton Denver Downtown Hotel in Denver, Colorado. Nationally and internationally, the AAAL conference has a reputation as a comprehensive and stimulating conference. Conference participants can look forward to in-depth colloquia, paper, poster, and round-table sessions, as well as topical and thought-provoking plenary presentations, excellent book exhibits, and plentiful opportunities for networking.

Proposals are invited for individual papers, colloquia, posters, and roundtable discussions. The deadline for proposal submission is 4:00 p.m. on July 17, 2019 (EDT; UTC-4).

Call for Papers by American Language Journal

Submissions in the 2000-8000 word range will be considered, with a focus on:

– linguistics and literature
– second language education
– Native American language education and revitalization
– heritage language education
– computer-assisted language learning (CALL)
– language policy
– applied linguistics

There is no preference for any particular academic subject. As such, articles will be accepted in a number of languages, including (although certainly not limited to) English, Spanish, Navajo, and Mayangna.

All papers are peer-reviewed. We would be happy to discuss your submission if you have questions. Please submit any question, abstract, or article to researchreadwithyou.com.

Call for papers: “Apellative and onoma”, Veliko Tarnovo, Bulgaria, September 27-29, 2019

The “Professor Nikolai Kovachev” Centre of Bulgarian Onomastics with St. Cyril and St. Methodius University of Veliko Turnovo kindly invites you to participate in the next International Scientific Conference  on Onomastics in honour of Prof. Dr. Ludwig Selimski, marking his 80th anniversary “Apellative and onoma. Aspects of Scientific Research” which will take place on September 27th – 29th, 2019.

 

Working languages are English, German, French, Russian and all Slavic languages.

Call for Papers: International Association for Robin Hood Studies

The Bulletin of the International Association for Robin Hood Studies is the peer-reviewed, open-access scholarly journal of The International Association for Robin Hood Studies. Scholars are invited to submit articles or essays detailing original research on any aspect of the Robin Hood tradition. The editors welcome essays in the following areas: formal literary explication, manuscript and early printed book investigations, historical inquiries, new media examinations, and theory or cultural studies approaches.

Call for papers: 21st Slovak International Onomastic Conference “Proper Names in the Interdisciplinary Context”

The scholars from the Eastern Europe organize the 21st Slovak Onomastic Conference around the topic “Proper Names in the Interdisciplinary Context”. It will be held in Nitra at the Constantine the Philosopher University, in September 10-12, 2019.

Call for Papers: Language and Identity: Intersections between Linguistics, Ethnology and Translation, Aberdeen, Scotland, March 30 2019

The Identity and Language Conference Committee at the University of Aberdeen has put out a call for papers for their one-day event, Language and Identity: Intersections between Linguistics, Ethnology and Translation. It will be held at Duncan Rice Library, University of Aberdeen, Saturday 30th March 2019.

In today’s modern society we develop identities related to our use of language, not only in relation to code switching within our native languages, but also across different languages. At the same time as individuals are gaining multiple identities through language acquisition, others are losing their identities to decreased use or extinction of their native tongues. Through globalisation the population of the world is interacting more across linguistic and cultural boundaries than ever before: through learning foreign languages and reading translated texts. How does this increased interaction with other languages affect our identities?

Call for Papers: Urban Place Names: Political, Economic, and Cultural Dimensions”

The new Special Issue of Urban Science “Urban Place Names: Political, Economic, and Cultural Dimensions“ aims to contribute to urban studies by exploring city landscapes through its toponymy. The main goal is to bring together contemporary urban toponymic studies scholarship, both from the traditional onomastic perspective and the recently emerged critical toponymy perspective, to examine new areas of spatial relationships between people, language, culture, urban landscapes, development, and political power worldwide.

Please submit your original papers or critical reviews that reflect the theoretical development, contemporary condition, and future challenges of urban place names studies from transdisciplinary approaches until 15th December 2019.
