From October 23-25, 2019, at Spain’s University of Alicante (San Vicente del Raspeig), a session of the International Conference on Verbal Humor will be held.  For this event, a special call for papers has been issued for a panel that will address the relationship between humor and irony. They welcome original papers, written either Spanish or English. Abstracts must be no longer than 350 words (without references). Each paper will be presented within a 20-minute period, plus 10 minutes for discussion and questions.

The 8th Nordic Geographers Meeting will be held in Trondheim, Norway, June 16–19 2019 and includes a panel called “Tightening the noose – the impact of constricted migration policy on sexual and gender minorities”.

As neoliberal and populist policies are enforced in countries in the EU, borders are becoming increasingly difficult to cross and welfare regimes are weakened. The options for individuals to migrate to the EU are diminished and existing migrants are left with lesser resources in host societies. Contemporary cultural politics of immigration is also increasingly organized around cultural unfitness of migrants in the host
society. Simultaneously, Western democracies have gradually marketed tolerance of sexual diversity as a distinct and inherent characteristic of their culture, distinguishing them from the homophobic rest. This while establishing a sexual humanitarian apparatus that turns out to shape, in a restrictive way, the asylum system. In this call for session presentations, we ask for scrutiny of how these shifts are affecting sexual and gender minorities, who appear as paradoxical figures in these politics.

Deutsche Gesellschaft für Namenforschung e.V. (German Association for Name Research eV) has announced a call for papers for their next conference, “Names in motion: Adaptation processes of person and place names in areal, diachronic, and social fields of tension”. The conference will be held at theUniversity of Münster, Germany, September 11-13, 2019.

As proper names refer directly to individual objects, they crucially depend on stable, fixed relationships between form and referent. However, such fixed references open up fields of tension when contexts change for people who bear and use the names. Changing contexts may prompt names to be formally adapted, meaning that – at least temporarily – names may lead a double life. The aim of this conference is to identify factors that motivate, condition, and constrain adaptation processes of person and place names to changing or varying circumstances.

As most of the proposed topics and questions are best addressed from a multidisciplinary perspective, contributions and approaches from social scientists, culture geographers and other disciplines are also welcome, in addition to linguistic-onomastic approaches. Talks (20 minutes + 10-minute discussion) or posters can be presented in German or English. The deadline for abstracts is 30 April 2019.

The Lavender Languages and Linguistics conference, dedicated to language and sexuality research, has run annually since 1993. In May 2019 scholars will convene in Sweden, with the conference being hosted in Gothenburg. Lavender Language 26 will retain its inclusive, supportive atmosphere and students and scholars with an interest in language and sexuality (broadly defined) will be welcome.

The 29th International Cartographic Conference will take place in Tokyo, Japan, 15–20 July 2019. The Organizing Committee of ICC2019 invites all interested participants to submit full papers or abstracts for the oral or poster presentations. Join and share the latest innovations and developments in mapping techniques, technological advancements, and current research in cartography and GIScience. Conference themes and topics are listed, but not limited to, below. The event is a unique experience to exchange ideas and encourage collaboration with colleagues from academia, government and industry.

All submissions will be reviewed by the International Scientific Committee. All accepted submissions will be published as the Advances in Cartography and GIScience of the ICA, Proceedings of the ICA, or Abstracts of the ICA. Selected papers will also be published in the International Journal of Cartography.

NORNA’s 49th symposium will be held in the middle of the North Sámi area in the town of Guovdageaidnu (Norwegian Kautokeino) in northern Norway, 24–25 April 2019. The symposium is set to last for two working days, with a provisional starting time of 09.00 on 24.4.2019 and finishing at 16.00 on 25.4.2019. Following the symposium, on 26.4.2019, there will be an optional excursion around the host town of Kautokeino.

The central topic of the symposium is to examine questions related to minority language names using various different approaches, as well as from a cross-disciplinary viewpoint. Presentations may deal with all types of name categories in onomastics, such as, e.g. minority language place names, personal names, administrative names, animal, business and artifact names.

Proposals for 20-minute paper presentations or for posters are due by 30th September 2018 at the latest.

The symposium is being hosted in collaboration with Sámi allaskuvla | Sámi University of Applied Sciences and Sámediggi | The Sámi Parliament in Norway, and will be held in the science-building, Diehtosiida, on the premises of Sámi University of Applied Sciences and the Sámi Parliament’s language department.

The International Conference Language in the Media 8 will be hosted by the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) and the Federal University of the State of Rio de Janeiro (UNIRIO) from July 23rd to 26, 2019. The conference aims to discuss the theme mediatising resistance. The relation between language and the mediatisation of resistance is particularly relevant these days in view of the intensification of tensions, bigotry, and polarization we have been witnessing worldwide.

A well-established body of research indicates that this state of conflict is partly articulated in media communication. It also shows just how high the stakes rise when attrition gets commodified. Although media interaction involves complex and layered power relations, it only exists amidst constant battles for meaning and contextualization. One can thus say that the production, circulation and interpretation of media texts are always power-resistance actions. However, the dynamics of these complementary practices and their transformation possibilities still demand thorough exploration. Foucault has taught us that power games are fluid and relational and, as such, are prone to instability and insubordination. These concerns embody the conference’s focus on struggles for domination-reversal enhanced by media semiosis. These topics will be addressed in keynotes by Daniel Silva (UFSC, Brazil), Deborah Cameron (University of Oxford, UK), and H. Samy Alim (UCLA, USA).

While favoring the focus on power-resistance processes, LinM8 will keep the interest in other broad sociolinguistic topics and their relations to processes of mediatisation. Submissions whose focus lies in the following areas are welcome:

• Language standardization and style
• Language policy and practice
• Language acquisition
• Multilingualism and cross-/inter-cultural communication
• Communication in professional contexts
• Representations of speech, thought, and writing
• Language and class, dis/ability, race/ethnicity, gender/sexuality and age
